The SOCCER BALL T-shirt
Luella's 'Stag' T-shirt will provide one soccer ball to school children in Kenya
Tee Impact: Each T-shirt provides a child a soccer ball to make them smile Buy the Tee
Location: Kenya
TONIC Goal: Provide 2,500 soccer balls to schoolchildren. Local African skills can produce these soccer balls also giving jobs. If you print messages on the soccer balls about bad diseases like HIV/AIDS, the toys become an education tool.
Why We Chose This Project:
Bouncing around with a soccer ball is a great distraction. We wanted to give African children a bunch of distractions. When we give them not just another soccer ball, but one with a lifesaving note about deadly diseases, printed right on there- it’s a double whammy. Alive & Kicking UK know these children love soccer balls but by getting African skills to produce them using African leather, it means that a whole community becomes connected.
Alive & Kicking works to set up stitching centres in disadvantageous areas to produce soccer balls. It provides work and income for African people, forms a market for African leather and gives joy to children by giving them something to play with. Because Africa's young people are most at risk from HIV/AIDS or malaria, printing messages of warning onto the balls is necessary. It reminds players about the dangers they face and enables educators to use the ball as an entry point to discuss the diseases. TONIC has partnered with Alive & Kicking UK with the aim of providing up to 2,500 balls to schoolchildren this year. There are going to some well distracted children out there very soon!
Let them play!
